Chief Fire Officer of the Edmonton Fire Rescue Services in Canada, Ken Block, has been appointed as Victoria’s first Fire Rescue Commissioner.

As of 1 December 2019, the responsibility for the administration of Victoria’s Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements has moved to Emergency Management Victoria (EMV).

The emergency management sector in Victoria has been working on building more meaningful community involvement, more effective partnerships and stronger recovery arrangements.

As I reflect on the situation in NSW and QLD, my thoughts are very much with the firefighters, emergency services and in particular, the communities impacted by fires in those states.

Victoria will have 50 aircraft available for the summer season to fight fires from the air and help keep communities safe. 

East and West Gippsland will be a focus for emergency services this coming summer, as very dry conditions over consecutive years results in an above-normal bushfire conditions.

Marine Search and Rescue in Victoria has received a total of $1.9 million of funding of Parliamentary Accounts and Estimates Committee for the 2019-20 financial year.
