Shepparton relief and community support

27 August 2021

The Shepparton community is receiving support from federal and state governments in response to the current COVID-19 situation in Northern Victoria.

A multi-agency approach is underway to support the community and emergency response, involving the Department of Health, the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, Emergency Management Victoria, Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions and the Australian Force (ADF).

More than 265 food relief packs have been delivered to residents in the past 48 hours via Australian Red Cross and GV Gives, with an additional 100 packs delivered recently by the Greater City of Shepparton through Foodshare. The Victorian Government has also pledged $50,000 to be provided to Foodshare immediately.

Specialised agencies have reached out to the local Aboriginal and culturally and linguistically diverse communities to provide tailored information and culturally appropriate food.

ADF resources have also been deployed to assist with COVID-19 testing, which will run until 24 September 2021.

Deputy Emergency Management Commissioner Debra Abbott and EMV Director Capability and Risk Lachlan Kelsall are in Shepparton assisting with the emergency response.

Deputy Emergency Management Commissioner Abbott said an enormous amount of work has already taken place locally, with the community supporting neighbours, friends and relatives.

“EMV  is working hard on the coordination of services to get the most effective response in Shepparton. We do have challenges such as depleted workforces, so the coordination of food delivery packages to those in need who are isolating as well as assisting those who are vulnerable with care, is our focus,” said Deputy Commissioner Abbott.

“We’re working with the ADF, local charities and major food retailers to optimise existing services, so we’re not duplicating efforts.”
