Emergency services score big at the MCG

20 May 2022

Victoria’s emergency management sector was the big winner at the AFL Emergency Services Match at the MCG last Saturday. Awareness and funds were raised for the Emergency Services Foundation (ESF), who will use the money to fund programs to tackle mental health and wellbeing across the entire sector.

Hawthorn Football Club hosted this showcase event to honour the contribution of Victoria’s emergency services.

This year, the opponent was Richmond Football Club. Fans for both teams showed great support for emergency services in the Bank Vic FanZone before the match.

Inside the stadium, Vanessa Amorossi performed live and an Air Ambulance helicopter circled above, as teams of emergency service personnel worked as one to put on a colourful pre-game ceremony. This included unfurling giant silks representing the colours of the emergency services. They also provided a guard of honour for both teams as they entered the field.

At quarter time, representatives from some of the agencies kicked for goal, with every straight shot scoring more funds for ESF. We thank Hawthorn Football Club for recognising and celebrating the emergency services with such a special event.
