Emergency Services Blood Challenge has begun

15 June 2020

The Australian Red Cross's Emergency Services Blood Challenge pits teams from across Australia against each other to donate the most blood products – and save lives.

Victorians who are part of an emergency service can join the Challenge by registering a Lifeblood Team, or by joining a team that your service has registered.

Once part of a team, any blood product donation you make between 1 June and 31 August will be automatically added to your team's total. You can follow the progress of your team, and other teams, throughout the Challenge.

The more members in your team, the greater your chances are of securing a spot on the podium.

Lifeblood Teams vie for places in four categories:

  • most donations
  • most new donors
  • most plasma donations
  • highest year-on-year growth.

A single blood donation can save up to three lives. The donated blood can be made into 22 different medical treatments. Treatments are used for events such as operations, childbirth, trauma, and illnesses and diseases.

Depending on what you choose to donate – blood or plasma – a donation appointment can take from 45 minutes to an hour and a half.
