Emergency Ready Trivia was launched in April last year and has been used numerous times to help prepare people by testing their knowledge of bush and house fires, floods, storms and heatwaves.
The project was developed by Mansfield Shire Council in response to difficulties experienced in attracting people to attend emergency readiness education sessions.
Mansfield Municipal Emergency Management Officer Sue Arndt says the format of the game allows participants to learn from each other in a social, enjoyable atmosphere rather than just listening to a lecture from an ‘expert’.
The experts (agency staff and volunteers) are also in the room to add their own knowledge and experience.
“The feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive with the majority of players learning ‘a lot’ and indicating that the questions were appropriate, the game was the right length and they ‘had a lot of fun’ while learning about emergency readiness,” Sue Hare said.
The game can be can be adapted to a range of risks, communities and demographics.
Sue Hare said the trivia was played in the small communities of Tolmie and Goughs Bay prior to the fire danger period last year. In the coming months, Mansfield Shire Council will be working with the CFA and SES to play trivia in more small communities, as well as with senior citizens and in schools.
Emergency Ready Mansfield has been packaged generically and is available on the Council website for any local council or agency to access.
Last year, Indigo Shire used the generic template and played Emergency Ready Trivia in five of their communities and received great feedback about the game, including:
“This was an awesome night, it made me consider my emergency plan and I hadn’t thought of it before.”
“Great talking with people to hear different views/opinions.”
”The concept of the game is excellent and the choice of questions were appropriate.”
